There is a duct in the heart that is supposed to close shortly after birth but in premature babies this may not happen. In Abigail's case hers is wide open. They have administered the first of three possible doses of meds in attempt to close this duct. We should know in the next few days if this was successful.
We are so very blessed. Abigail is so beautiful. We know that God has a purpose for all of this but it does not make it any easier. Please continue to pray for her healing, strength, and continued development physically, mentally and spiritually.

I went to check on Abigail tonight. They gave her the second dose of neoprofen for her PDA(open duct in her heart)which is typical in premies. They will give her the third and final dose for the first round and do another echo on Saturday morning to make sure that the duct closes.
They are giving her caffeine tonight to help her respiration because they are taking her ventilator tube out tomorrow morning. Everyone comments on how beautiful she is. I agree but I am slightly biased.
Please continue to pray for her.

Exciting news. Go Abigail!!!
Love ya bunches,
Mom (Abigail's Grandma) Lovin' it.
Cheryl and I spent 8 hours at the NICU. We saw her doing well and we saw her doing not so well. For the most part she is doing great. The duct in her heart is still open so they gave her another dose of neoprofen. Tomorrow they will do an echo to see if the duct closed. We will not find that out possibly until Tuesday because of the holiday. She is off of the ventilator so they had to increase her oxygen a little. We got to change her diaper twice, wipe off her face and take her temperature. We are still waiting for her first poop to get rid of the bilirubin but since they cannot feed her yet it may not happen until the duct gets closed since there is nothing in her stomach to push it through. They are still feeding her through an IV. They brought in a little boy from Kettering at 3pm and the transportation nurse was loud and laughing it up like it was a sports bar which caused Abigail a lot of discomfort and her vitals started going up and getting erratic which made Cheryl cry and me angry. We stayed until they gave her the neoprofen and then prayed over her and came home to rest.
Please continue to pray that the duct will close so that they can start feeding her. The benefits of feeding her through a tube in her stomach are that she obviously can gain weight, push the bilirubin out of her system so they can turn off the bili-lights, take off her mask and make her more comfortable.

Saturday night:
I went to see and pray for Abigail. The doctor said that her respiratory system is not where it should be for her age and size. Abigail's duct is still open also. She is going to get another round of three doses of neoprofen starting tonight. As for her respiratory system it is just going to take some time.
Please pray for her.
Love,
Scott, Cheryl and Abigail
Dear Scott, Cheryl, and Abigail,
We just wanted you to know that people from Georgia to Texas are praying for you guys.
Stan and Marcha Elder (Heather Batson's dad and mom)
Cheryl and I went to see Abigail. They changed out her isolette so Cheryl got to hold her for about 15 minutes. She is so precious! I love her so much if I could take away all of her hurts and pains I would trade with her in a heartbeat.
The nurse said that she could not hear a murmur from the open duct but without an echo they cannot be certain. The nurse also said that sometimes the duct will close and stress and other things can cause it to open up again. So we are praying for it to close and stay closed.
Abigail's heartrate was elevated probably due to heat from the bili-lights, noise, her apnea and from not being swaddled up feeling secure. When Cheryl was holding her she was all swaddled up and her heartrate and respiration settled down more. So when Abigail's bilirubin count goes down enough they will be able to bundle her up real tight making her feel calm and secure. Her bilirubin was down from the past two days so they took away one of the lights but still have one on her.
thanks for setting up this page. I love reading the updates. Abigail is so blessed to have such concerned and loving parents. we continue to pray for your sweet little girl.
love,

We visited Abigail yesterday morning and last night. She looked much more serene with the bili lights off!! They are doing the second echo today to see if her duct closed. We'll let you know!
P.S. Holding her Christmas Eve was the best Christmas present I have EVER had in my entire life.
Thank you guys for keeping us posted on the precious little one. She is so Blessed to have two of the best parents I know. I can't wait to be able to see her. We love you all.
Love,
Debbie
No need to rub it in that you got to hold her. Just wait till Sunday she's all mine.
Tuesday night: We went to see Abigail, they took her off the bubble cpap and now have her on the nasal cannula. The difference between the two is the cpap has about four times more pressure to help her breath than the cannula.
She is doing very well on the cannula although sometimes she forgets to breath and her respiration drops way too low and it scares the crap out of me. The great thing is that she picks it back up on her own and doesn't need to be stimulated.
They did the echo of her heart and the duct is still open somewhat. They don't think that it is open enough to worry about and they are going to feed her starting tomorrow morning. We hope that her digestive system can handle everything so that she can start to gain weight and hopefully in time her duct will close on its own.
Tomorrow morning they are going to do the ultrasound on her head to make sure that all of the blood vessels are looking great. We should know the results by Thursday.
Man she is beautiful.
Thank you so very much for all of your prayer and support. We are so blessed to have family and friends like you. Please pray that the head scan returns normal and she is able to digest her feedings and that her respiratory system develops more and whatever the Lord puts on your heart.
Love you
Scott, Cheryl and Abigail
I just called the NICU and she said they did the scan on her head this morning (of which results will probably be back tomorrow) and the ran some extra tests to make sure she is feeling okay and they aren't missing anything since she is working hard to breath (they said it might just be her underdevelopment) but they are gonna just check some other things. I pray that it is just her underdevelopment and that she is feeling good! We'll keep you updated.
Love, Cheryl
We got a call from NICU and they are delaying feeding Abigail until possibly tomorrow. Her blood work has an elevated white blood cell count indicating an infection. They said she looked great and doesn't act sick and they have begun treating her with antibiotics. They did a chest x ray and it showed hazy lungs so they put her back on the c-pap (which blows oxygen in her nostrils with more pressure). I am on my way in to see her and Scott will meet up with us after work. Please pray that her antibiotics will work quickly and effectively so she can begin feeding. Thanks bunches!
Cheryl
I love these updates. I love getting all the details. she is at a wonderful hospital. it soundsl like they are staying on top of everything. we are praying for abigail.
love,
the freeman
p.s. just a thought. one of adam's classmates in medical school was born at 26 weeks, back in 1978. He got the highest score on his medical board, in the whole graduating class. HE IS BRILLIANT. He didn't let that prematurity slow him down any. :)
I will go in at 1 today and hopefully find out the results of some tests. They did a brain scan we get the results of today and some blood work. Abigail's blood work had indicated an infection so they started her on some antibiotics.
She is having a hard time breathing and sometimes forgets to. Her heart rate is sometimes just all over the place. They said it could be because of three things 1) her duct not being closed 2) her infection or 3) she was taken of the cpap to early. Though I am not a doctor I don't think it is three because they have her back on it and she has a time of it occassionally. They are going to wait a couple days do another echo and try to decide if it is the duct. If it is they may opt for surgery to repair it. It is sort of a waiting game right now. Please pray for her strength, infection, and duct and whatever else you feel led to pray about.
Also, most of the nurses are awesome there. We have drawn a few lately that concern us. They just don't seem to care as much as some of the others. Scott went in this morning and her blanket was on her lip and (she drools a lot and blows bubbles cause she can't really swallow) and the blanket was kind of crusted to her lip. He mentioned it to the nurse and she just kind of said "Oh, that little drooler" but...arghh!! Also, when she drops some of her stats, some aren't so quick at coming over while others are. Of course I want the nurses that ARE quick in coming over. So if you could pray that she draws all the awesome nurses that would be great too.
I pray that Abigail continues to get stronger, her test come out ok, to get the best nurses possible, and for you and Scott to continue to have the strength to go this journey with Abigail. All of you are a blessing to this family. All of you are always in our prayers and thoughts. We love you all very much.
Love,
Debbie
Go Abigail! Go Abigail!
God is so faithful! He will continue to bless her and she will, step by step, become the perfect healthy little baby girl He planned her to be.
Abigail just came before the her building was completed from the blueprints. She will still be perfect in all ways.
Your strength and belief is awesome!
Love you bunches,
Grandmama
